Tynget af en traumatisk fortid forsøger Hyesun at skabe et nyt liv i et samfund, der kræver alt af hende, samtidig med at hun skal skaffe penge til sin syge mor i Nordkorea. Hyesun betaler en høj pris for sin frihed. Er det det værd? HANA KOREA havde verdenspremiere på Busan International Film Festival, hvor den vandt den prestigefyldte Publikumspris i sin sektion. Sharon Choi, der samarbejdede med Bong Joon Ho på Oscar-vinderen PARASITE, har været med til at skrive filmen. I hovedrollerne ses Minha Kim (PACHINKO), Joo-Ryoung Kim (SQUID GAME) og Seo-hyun An (OKJA).

Based on a true story, HANA KOREA follows Hyesun, a young North Korean refugee who has just arrived in fast-paced, hyper-modern South Korea. As she struggles to adapt to her new life, Hyesun must confront the emotional toll of leaving her past behind while trying to carve out a place for herself in a society that demands dedication and sacrifice. Through Hyesun’s journey, HANA KOREA explores the challenges of modern human existence in a world marked by increasing global tensions and polarization. Hyesun’s story personalizes the consequences of division forcing us to reflect on the wrongdoings of our past and present. Her journey toward freedom comes at a steep price. Was it worth it? Can she truly let go of her past?
