Jacques er en talentfuld journalist, der har ry for at være en objektiv efterforsker. En dag rekrutteres han derfor af Vatikanet til at undersøge en mystisk sag i en lille fransk landsby, hvor en ung pige påstår at have set Jomfru Marias genfærd. På grund af sit syn har den unge pige, Anna, fået sig et stort følge af troende fra landsbyen, og hun splittes nu mellem offentlighedens opmærksomhed og sin personlige tro. Jacques begynder langsomt at redde de mange indviklede tråde ud og opdager snart de hemmelige motiver bag sagen. En sag der ryster ham dybt.

Religious mystery thrillers with strong psychological suggestion do not appear often on the big screen. Skillfully build, “The Apparition” leads us through the personal transformation of Jacques (Vincent Lindon) from a traumatized war reporter, left deaf in one ear after a bomb explosion, to a person, to whom is revealed another, more spiritual reality. After his return from the Middle East, where he lost his photographer, Jacques receives an assignment from the Vatican to investigate Anna, a young novice, who is living in the mountains of South-East France. This innocently-looking girl claims that the Virgin Mary herself has appeared to her, turning to mankind and asking us all to aid those suffering. Never been particularly religious, Jacque is in dilemma – is Anna lying or is there a true power that is trying to remind us that love is the strongest force in the world?
