An older lady is found hanging inside a church in the remote Westfjords of Iceland. It is not an ordinary case, since there are crosses, carved into her back. Assuming that this is a result of an abuse, investigators approach her husband. He insists that he has never touched his wife. This tragic event leads to an investigation of a number of strange deaths of elderly people in the region. Freyr, the new psychiatrist in town who is assisting the police, finds out that the deceased woman was obsessed with the disappearance of a 7-year old boy. At the same time, across the bay in an abandoned village, another plot line develops. The married couple Katrin and Garðar is restoring a house when supernatural things start occurring. The two stories gradually intertwine and it turns out that the mysteriously vanished boy is the connecting link.
